Course summaryA dynamic and freshly-designed course based on 'Immersion Principles' and validated by the Dept. of Education and Skills and now at the cutting edge of English language teacher training. Built on the framework of the highly successful TEFL course designed by Tony Penston in 1995, now available in Bray, a seaside town south of Dublin. This is a practical course where all subjects are closely related to what happens in the classroom. Participants are gradually brought to teaching practice after live and video class observations, lesson plan coaching and peer(micro) teaching. Personal assistance with lesson preparation minimises anxiety. Participants are given verbal and written feedback after each of 6 'whole hour, whole lesson' TP sessions. A desire to teach with kindness and competence and the ability to act on advice are the simple ingredients for success.

Very good course. Practical advice that encourages you to make the classes interesting and teach language that is useful to the students in their daily lives. Instructors were willing to take time to field questions and help with lesson plans. A rewarding course that is quite challenging.

I completed this course last month and found it both challenging and rewarding. Feedback, teacher involvement and approachability were excellent, and the TPs very well guided and supported. The only area that was perhaps not fully covered was the \'English for specific purposes\'. I highly recommend this course to anyone new to classroom teaching as I was.

The CELT course at Language College Ireland is intensive and demanding, but highly rewarding. The instructors provide positive on-going support in a relaxed atmosphere. Instructor feedback is based on direct professional experience and provides creative and enthusiastic support to students who are encouraged to think on their feet! The course places strong emphasis on learner autonomy and developing teacher\'s awareness and sensitivity to individual students as well as teaching interesting classes to groups. Instructor competence is high with an expectation that students are flexible, responsible and motivated in relation to their own learning. Feedback is balanced and emphasizes student\'s interpersonal skills alongside the practical skills. Much of the course combines theory with direct observation of other teachers, reporting and reflecting on class observation, assignments and bringing one\'s learning to teaching practice.Peer-support and working together is strongly encouraged throughout the course, especially during lesson plan guidance and teaching practice. In addition to practical advice regarding future job placements during the course, the school sends regular emails after course completion to notify graduates of employment opportunities. The demands of the final portfolio are considerable, but when the modules (essays and assignments) are completed gradually over the course period, the result is a high level of knowledge combined with a sense of great achievement. At the end of the course I felt confident and ready to teach English at home or abroad. The course has given me a high level of skill and an internationally and nationally acknowledged qualification.
