Assessment criteria:Competence in supervised tutoring; ability to assess learner needs, plan lessons and assess effectiveness of lessons; ability to plan evaluation on the basis of objectives; ability to identify methodological underpinnings of syllabi and select and adapt syllabi in accordance with learner and program needs.

Course entry requirements:High school completion with a minimum average of 65% in English language arts.
Non-native speakers of English must achieve at least TOEFL 500/189 (old form) or 80 with 20 in each band (new form), CanTEST 4.5 (including speaking) or the equivalent in other recognized tests of English language skill.

    Course material deals extensively with children/teens but practice is primarily with adults aged 18 to 50.

    Course summaryThe TEFL Intensive is a four-week course held twice each year at the University of Saskatchewan. It consists of the first two courses (80 course hours plus 12-15 tutoring practice hours)in the nationally accredited 250-hour CERTESL program. Students who write and pass the final exams and achieve a minumum average of 60% may transfer into the CERTESL program and complete it by correspondence. The TEFL Intensive provides participants who want to teach overseas with the essential tools needed to teach successfully, and also enables those who wish to make TESL/TEFL their career to get a quicker start on the accredited program. This 80-hour certificate is also offered to part-time learners through distance education, but tutoring practice is voluntary and cannot be supervised in the distance format.
